Pepperdine Pride - New Music Reviews

We all deserve a little something to help distract us or at least help us cope with the weird situation we find ourselves in at the moment. One way I find peace, or help me process what is going on around me, is by listening to music. These two choices for today did just that for me and I hope they bring you joy, understanding, and peace too.

Reviewing music is always fun, but when they are new creations from fellow Pepperdine Alum-- it takes it to a whole new level. AYO WAVES!

1. To lift your spirits: "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" by Emily Daniels

(released 3/20/2020)

This first one is *extra* special to me for a few reasons: Emily is my sorority little, a close friend, andddd I also manage her as an artist. OK, I know what you're thinking- well this is a little biased- actuallllly, when I first moved to Nashville I told myself (and others who were asking me) that I wouldn't get back into music management, but when I got to see Emily perform her originals in person, I knew her storytelling and artistry was something incredibly special. I want to help her reach her goals in whatever capacity I can and I can assure you, I was a huge fan first before persuading her to let me be her representation.

Last week was quite the ride as she released her debut single, "Breaking Up is Hard to Do" on all major music platforms. It's no surprise she was instantly featured on Medium, SouthernFellow, Cowgirl Magazine, etc. This song is the epitome of catchy and resembles strong-headed Country leading ladies such as the Dixie Chicks, Shania Twain, and Maddie and Tae.

"Whoever said breakin up is hard to do, Never got to break up with you"

Don't be fooled by the title, this song is not about wallowing in self pity, but the exact opposite. Emily's witty and sassy lyrics ring out in a self-empowering anthem as she says good riddance to her ex and hello to freedom.

My favorite parts of this 90's country beckoning bop is the a cappella harmony-enriched lyric that starts off the song strong. The country fiddle brings an unparalleled element that carries throughout the song that is crisp while exuding an infectious sassy twang. It's hard not to sing-along in the choruses or to find yourself humming it throughout the day.

This song is sure to bring you to new high levels of confidence and boost your mood. Make sure to keep this country gal on your radar as she plans to release more music later in the year.

The song was produced and mixed by Zachary Manno, written by Emily Daniels, Kelly Seidel, and Hailey Verhaalen.

2. To help you process the hard moments: "Jesus Callin'" by Christy P Klotz

(released 2/28/2020)

If you're in need of a good cry or maybe just a song that will help match your understanding of the somberness hanging over world, but also want to be reminded of unfailing hope-- "Jesus Callin'" will help you get there.

Country singer/songwriter, Christy P Klotz, wrote the single after her grandma passed away to detail the hope and inevitable questions about life and what comes after. The folky and peaceful arrangement is honest, emotional, and freeing all at the same time.

The touching tribute begins with simple chords and a soft melody that will have you thinking you're about to hear a classic tune from Tom Petty, but as Christy's sweet voice breaks through, your pulled into a storytelling adventure that is will leave you reflective.

Christy's voice is very familiar of Country icon, Dolly Parton, this is especially notable as she belts in the heartfelt bridge. The acoustic guitar melodies accompanied by quick and bright electric guitar wails resemble classic country while the "oohs and ahhs"of background vocals bring a sweetness that is unmistakably modern.

The lyrics are bittersweet; hopeful with a twinge of sadness.

"Wearin' out these pages, hopin for the savin'"

Take a listen and try not to feel introspective. The song was produced by Jordan Seah.
